1.Intro

The history of the Staunton Chessmen dates back to the spring of 1849, when the design was registered by Nathaniel Cooke. The Staunton pattern was later manufactured by John Jaques of London and sold to the public in the autumn of 1849. The design was named after the English Shakespearean scholar Howard Staunton, who claimed to be a world champion. There is much speculation as to whether the design was actually the brainchild of Cooke, Jaques or Staunton. It is relatively clear to this author that the pattern was not designed by the egotistical Staunton, as he never claimed to be.

It is well known that on 1 March 1849 Nathaniel Cooke, aged 198, of the Strand, London, registered a decorative design for a group of chessmen under the Decorative Designs Act of 1842. At that time, there was no provision for the registration of any designs or ivory items, and registration was restricted to Class 2, items made mainly of wood.

John Jaques acquired the right to manufacture such sets and they were made available for retail trade on 29 September 1849. On the same day, the following advertisement appeared in the Illustrated London News:

Under the auspices of the famous chess player, Mr. Stainton, a set of chess pieces has recently appeared whose patterns combine elegance and solidity to an unprecedented degree. A guiding principle is to give meaning to the various pieces through their form – thus the king is represented by a crown, the queen by a crown, and so on. These pieces are often designed to be hand-friendly; it is noteworthy that, although the elegance of form is enhanced to such an extent, it does not come at the expense of practicality. The Mr. STAUNTON’S pattern takes but elevates the conventional form; the base of the Pieces has a large diameter and is more solid than the usual set. @ Illustrated London News, 8 September 1849.

2.Reviews

I was so frustrated that the camera and torch on my Galaxy S7 broke and I tried several times to fix it, including restoring the factory settings, but to no avail. I went to the VZW shop in Madison where the staff opened the door for me, greeted me warmly and helped me immediately. The employee who checked my phone (I don’t know his name, oops!) also ran a diagnostic and determined that there was nothing else he could do but order me a new phone. He apologised and said that it would be shipped overnight the next day and should arrive on Thursday (today is Tuesday). The whole process took less than 5 minutes and was without a doubt the most pleasant experience I have had at any wireless shop. Best of all – my phone has been shipped and will be here tomorrow!

My dad passed away last week and I’ve been helping my mum sort everything out.

If you’ve never been through this experience before, apart from being emotional, it can be very painful as there is so much to do and you are completely at the mercy of each vendor to close everything down, which can be very, very stressful.

The sales rep we spoke to earlier in the week instructed us to go to a shop as soon as we got our father’s death certificate. So we did. However, this was clearly not the process we were supposed to follow.

After helping us get through to customer service again, Heather, the shop manager, heard how our conversation with the second service rep had gone, sat with us and helped us through everything. When we hung up a second time the problem still hadn’t been resolved so she called them again with us. After more than an hour in the shop, my mum was finally ready to go.

Now, I’ve been a Verizon customer since I was 16 and I’ve always provided customer service for them, but I don’t think I’ve ever met someone so invested in making sure we got the help we needed.

I really can’t say thank you enough. The kindness and compassion she showed my mum and I, especially sitting with us through two (in-store) customer service calls after they told us there was nothing they could do, was second to none.

Thank you again, Heather.
